What Causes Earwax Buildup ?
Earwax buildup can be caused by several factors, including :
- Producing too much earwax : Some people naturally have more earwax than others. This is usually not a problem, but it can lead to buildup if the earwax is not removed regularly.
- Having narrow ear canals : People with narrow ear canals are more likely to experience earwax buildup because the wax has a harder time moving out of the canal.
- Using cotton swabs to clean your ears : Cotton swabs can push earwax deeper into the ear canal, leading to buildup.
- Having a skin condition : C People with certain skin conditions, such as eczema, are more likely to experience earwax buildup.
- Being elderly : Earwax becomes drier and harder with age, which makes it more likely to build up.
- Having a foreign object in your ear : A foreign object, such as a piece of cotton or a bead, can block the ear canal and prevent earwax from moving out.

Tips For Preventing Earwax Buildup:
Here are some tips for preventing earwax buildup:
- Avoid using cotton swabs to clean your ears.
- Keep your ears dry. Earwax is more likely to build up if your ears are wet. After swimming or showering, dry your ears thoroughly with a towel.
- Wear earplugs when swimming or using machinery that produces a loud noise.
- Use over-the-counter ear drops that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to soften earwax. These drops can help to loosen earwax so it can be removed more easily.
- Have your ears professionally cleaned by a doctor or audiologist if you experience frequent earwax buildup. A doctor or audiologist can remove earwax safely and effectively.
