A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of cells or tissue is removed for the initial evaluation or evaluation of extent of disease. When a patient presents with certain symptoms or suspicious findings in the ear, nose, throat, head, or neck region, the ENT doctor may decide to perform a biopsy to obtain a tissue sample for further evaluation.
The ENT doctor is trained and qualified to perform various procedures within their specialty, including biopsies. The type of biopsy performed will depend on the specific area of concern and the suspected condition. Common biopsy techniques used by ENT doctors include:
- Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) : A thin, hollow needle is used to withdraw a small sample of cells or fluid from a lump or mass. This procedure is often used for evaluating thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, or other superficial lesions
- Core Needle Biopsy : A larger needle is used to obtain a small core of tissue from a deeper area, such as the neck or throat.
- Endoscopic Biopsy : An endoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera) is used to visualize the inside of the nose, throat, or other areas, and a biopsy forceps is used to take a tissue sample.
- Excisional Biopsy : In some cases, the ENT doctor may remove the entire abnormal tissue or lesion during a surgical procedure.
The collected tissue sample is then sent to a pathologist who will examine it under a microscope to make a definitive diagnosis. Based on the results of the biopsy, the ENT doctor can develop an appropriate treatment plan tailored to the patient's specific condition.
